Rhubarb. The pinkish-red plant that is in fact a fruit and not a vegetable. Most commonly baked into pies and crumbles. But you read the title correctly. Reasons to drink, not eat. Because rhubarb, don’t you know, makes a fine cup of tea. Not only in the taste department, but also in the wow-this-is-incredibly-healthy department too. Yes, it still makes a fabulous pie. But there’s more than one way to eat your rhubarb.
Ultimately, whether you bake it, drink it, nibble it raw, or shred it onto salads, rhubarb is all sorts of healthy. And here’s a few reasons why. . .
Rhubarb’s got calcium
We all know about calcium. Strong bones, healthy teeth. And rhubarb’s got it in spades. In fact, they say that one cup of rhubarb contains around 10% of your daily recommended calcium intake. So it makes for a lovely supplement.
So get them bones strong and healthy, and keep all your teeth until your old and grey, with a daily dose of rhubarb.
It’s not a breakfast cereal. But it is an important vitamin necessary for blood clotting, which helps wounds heal. Rhubarb contains lutein. And lutein is a carotenoid that helps keep your eyes healthy. It’s great for maintaining good vision. And its other eye-health benefits include: less eye fatigue and glare sensitivity, stronger eye tissue, and promotion of normal visual function.
And since smokers, postmenopausal females, and those with blue eyes all have lower-than-average levels of lutein, finding good natural sources to boost your intake can be very beneficial in the long run.
Eyes aside. Lutein is also great for the brain, and has been found to influence visual processing and other neural functions. Cognitive impairment has been linked with lower lutein levels. And boosted lutein levels have been associated with improved memory function.
