You lovely people might have seen or heard about green tea and wondered what all the fuss was about. We have all probably overheard a friend talk about their green tea habit or seen it on the menu when we meet up at the coffee shop to catch up on the lives of those around us. But ask someone about the benefits of green tea (go, we dare you!) and you will most probably end up with a blank face in reply. And that doesn’t help anyone. One of the major benefits of green tea is linked to weight loss. Like you, we’re a little sceptical about all of the claims made from just about every product that claims to help you lose weight. If we believed all of the hype, then we’d go around drinking cider vinegar and eating nothing but pulses and beans. And we know where that might end up…

There is a chunk of scientific research behind this benefit of green tea though. The polyphenol found in green tea has been shown to increase the rate at which the body oxidises fat. This is directly linked to the metabolism and the rate at which your body turns food into energy. The faster this happens, the more efficiently you burn calories.

Benefits of Green Tea: The Blood

You might not think that the humble cup of green tea (we like Kombucha the best) could do anything much to the blood in our body, after all the digestive system isn’t directly linked to the blood stream before it reaches the stomach. But there are two main influences green tea can have on the blood system, with some pretty remarkable results, if we say so ourselves.

Firstly, green tea helps to regulate the blood sugar level by supressing the rise of glucose in the bloodstream immediately after eating. The body would normally react to this by sending out insulin to deal with that glucose barrage. One of the benefits of green tea is that the body doesn’t have to make this happen and you can reduce your chances of getting type 2 diabetes.

Secondly, scientists are working on the theory that green tea relaxes the lining of blood vessels that keep them more relaxed. This actually helps them to withstand increases in blood pressure and can stop blood clots, which are shown to be a major cause of heart disease.
